  I had dinner with a friend last Friday evening at Benny's From the moment we were seated, we felt the coldness of the wait staff. We tried to engage in brief conversation with to no avail. The waiter gave us the menu for restaurant week. He did not even go over the menu choices or ask if we wanted to see another menu. The owner of the restaurant Benny greeted the patrons at the table next to us but never spoke to my friend and I . It was apparent that we were not welcomed. The waiter did not come back to our table during our meal to see if we were enjoying the meal or needed anything. I guess that don't like to have blacks in their restaurant. We finished our dinner, both in disbelief that this kind of thing still happens in 2016. I will never forget that experience. And Zagat's review indicated they treat you like family. NOT TRUE.

  This place is a gem! Real deal old school Italian food. Good service waiters really care about the place the food and the guests. If you want real Italian this is the place.

  You must award one star in order to present a review. But my intent was to award ZERO stars, I am the President / CEO of an Italian Aerospace Company visiting the USA, New York, Long Island with 18 of my colleagues and dozens of others from Livorno, Milan (Thales Alenia Space), Rome (The Italian Space Agency), and the European Space Agency to support a seven- to ten-year contract with Grumman. On Saturday, 25 March 2017 I asked a member of this team, “Andiamo a cena fuori” = “Let’s go out for dinner.” The member declined and, I chose to go alone to Benny’s. What a disaster! When I arrived I said, “Ciao. Somo nuovo qui.” = “Hello. I am new here.” The person did not speak Italian but that was not a problem because I did not expect that. (Perhaps speaking Spanish would have been better.) Because I arrived alone and without a reservation – the website says nothing about reservations – I was seated at a two-person table, facing the wall and in the middle of work-station area where several of the wait staff were slinging menus, pouring water, organizing trays. Not my idea of ambience and atmosphere for a Saturday evening dinner in an Italian restaurant. I complained and my conversation with the restaurant staff member was interrupted by someone in the image of Il Duce: short and pudgy and, as I discovered, with Il Duce’s personality. In one word= miserable. Benito and Benny more than a coincidence. Loud, aggressive and contemptible he tried to convince me that his restaurant was too busy to accommodate one person without a reservation anywhere but at that one table. So, if I stayed, I would be denied the peace and quiet (until the locals broke out their cell phones) afforded to others. I asked Il Duce where in Italy he had ever visited and had been seated against a work station. He dodged the question first in English and then in Italian. I am too old an Italian-American to suffer fools such as Benito. I will be vigilant to ensure that none of my team of 17 engineers and scientists and none of the teams which visit from Italy over the next seven to ten years patronize this place. Like Il Duce: stupid. All for one table!
